Default WRC Rally Finland Rd 9 "spoilers"

The mid season break is over and back to the job for WRC.Finland will be a great spectacle with some of the biggest jumps on tour.

    Shakedown:

Petter Solberg and his brother Henning were equal quickest in the shakedown for the Neste Oil Rally Finland on Thursday, the ninth round in the 2008 World Rally Championship and the first event following the summer break.

Petter and Henning both completed the short 3.76 kilometre test, 6 kilometres north of the service park, in 2 minutes 3.6 seconds, the former opting for five runs in his Impreza WRC2008, while Henning took his Focus RS WRC07 through the test one more time.

Citroen's Sebastien Loeb meanwhile was next up, 0.6 seconds slower in his C4 WRC, setting the same time as Gigi Galli.

Suzuki's Toni Gardemeister and Andreas Mikkelsen rounded out the top six, both with a quickest time of 2 minutes 4.7 seconds, while Chris Atkinson and Jari-Matti Latvala were seventh and eighth.

Urmo Aava and Matthew Wilson completed the top ten, with current championship leader and pre-event favourite Mikko Hirvonen eleventh.

Suzuki's Per-Gunnar Andersson was the only runner to have problems and engine issues with the 'B-spec' SX4 WRC meant he ended proceedings in 16th - 3.9 seconds slower than the sister car.

The Rally Finland now continues later on today, with the first run through the short 2.06 kilometre Killeri SSS.

Lavata hit a rock and a steering arm broke moments after sending him off the road. Not happy!

Loeb could find himself in trouble after this incident at the end of the stages. It is being investigated by officials to see if there was any breach.Rules state something like no help from spectaters without penalty even when going between stages.

    Sebastien Loeb [Citroen Total WRT]:

"I'm thrilled to have won this rally and I'm especially pleased with the way we won it. From start to finish, the scrap reminded me of the thrilling clashes we had last year with Marcus Grönholm. It was a very close run thing throughout and we were never able to relax. The decision to keep the lead at the end of the opening day involved a certain amount of risk because we didn't know exactly how much road-sweeping we would have to do. It meant pushing hard all the way, but the tactic finally paid off."

"Our objective today was to keep up a fast pace over the final day's 40.47km of stages and keep a close eye on how our main rival was going. It was important not to make any mistakes and that meant building in a certain safety margin. After spending the first two days driving flat out between the trees, I had absolutely no intention of letting our 42nd WRC win slip from our grasp. Today's victory also means we have met one of the objectives we set ourselves at the start of the season, and that's a particularly satisfying feeling. I had every confidence in my Citroën C4 from flag to flag and this result gives our chances in the Drivers' championship a terrific boost since it narrows the gap down to just 1 point. It's been a positive weekend, too, for Citroën in the Manufacturers' standings."

Mikko Hirvonen [BP Ford Abu Dhabi WRT]:

"I'm pleased with my driving but I came here to win and Loeb found a few seconds more. We played cat and mouse all weekend and when I won a stage, he usually won the next. For there to be only nine seconds between us after all this crazy driving is amazing. I lost the time by not being brave enough in the narrow sections. It'll be difficult but we must now fight for the win on every round."

We all can't be heroes.Somebody has to sit on the sides and clap as they go by.

    Atkinson moves into WRC contention

    August 04, 2008

QUEENSLANDER Chris Atkinson has charged back into contention for the World Rally Championship after clinching third place in the Rally of Finland.

The Subaru driver produced a cool-headed drive under extreme pressure to claim his fifth podium from the first nine events of the series.

French star Sebastien Loeb won the event by nine seconds from Mikko Hirvonen but remains second in the series to the Finn.

However Hirvonen's lead has been reduced to the slimmest margin - he leads Loeb by just one point on the standings.

Atkinson gathered six more points for his third place, lifting his tally to 37, two clear of the man who was his major threat, Spain's Daniel Sordo.

"To finish on the podium in Finland is fantastic, it's one of those rallies that you really, really want to do well on and it's great to add it to the CV," Atkinson said.

"The guys did a fantastic job, the car was great and I was just able to keep pushing hard.

"I really want to thank everybody in the team, it's just really cool to be here on the podium the first time in Finland with the new car, and of course its great to be back in third in the championship.

"It's been a great weekend, really good."

Subaru technical boss David Lapworth said the rally gave the team its first idea of how the new car will perform under full rally conditions.

"We used Greece and Turkey as part of extended test program, so this is the first event in which we've really focussed on our performance on gravel," Lapworth said.

"It's been our first chance to really see how the car performs on gravel and how the work done in testing translates to a rally, and it is clear we've made good progress.

"Chris did a great job, and we learned a lot that we will take into New Zealand (later this month) in particular, as the next gravel rally, as we continue the steep part of the learning curve that we are currently in."

Atkinson went into the final day with just a one second buffer over the Spaniard.

But on a day with just three special stages and 40 competitive kilometres the Australian attacked from the outset with immediate effect.

By the end of the opening stage Atkinson's lead had stretched to 13.4 seconds and he was able to defend that across the final two stages to eventually beat Sordo home by 13.9 seconds.

Atkinson has now amassed three thirds and two seconds this season.

We all can't be heroes.Somebody has to sit on the sides and clap as they go by.
