Poor facilities = true fans (rif raf)
New facilities =stuck up fans The powers that be want a change in the type of crowd they attract to the races, out with the old in with the new. Car racing is heading the wrong way as far as us old type of fans go.

Like most sports today, promoters greed & want for more & more profit is what's driving it. Not what the fans really want out of their sport.

OH&S is a bigplayer in any avenue today. Owners, promotors, teams and drivers are all responsible to ensure safety to race fans, drivers, team members, sponsors, promotors and owners. Race fans are also responsible, but generally acknowleged to a lesser degree. The owner and promotor are responsible to ensure that pit facilities contribute to a safe workplace. If the paddock has no barrier to keep the fans away from moving vehicles, and a fan is injured if struck by a vehicle, then the driver, the team, the team owner, the promotor, the owner and any other person connected to that vehicle is accountable. The fee you pay as entry to the paddock, is in a large part, payment of an insurance policy. Part of your general admission fee also goes toward insurance. That's why the catch fence and barriers are in place. The promotor, the owner etc have been instructed by insurance companies and government legislation to ensure the race fan is separated from danger. This is one reason why many smaller local speedway tracks around the country have closed also. Not enough income to pay the necessary bills. Cheers

Just on another sour note.On the news last night some noddy from Avesco was saying it cost 2.5 million too bring the V8 Circuis to town.We get 90000 spectators over the weekend. My point is what the hell does it cost to go to the middle east rounds and what is the return from the less then full crowds over there.Wonder if they get the squeeze put on them for more sanction money or a no show will follow. My guess is theV8s pay for the privlige

I dont know if OH&S had anything to do with it. I wonder what the WA drivers think of this. Any way its gone and i wonder if they will now add another international track to the championship in the near future.

Thata boy Lyonsy ... now ya talkin'. On the eight day, God invented sprintcars..
![]() Tricky, I don't deny the atmosphere, however, when peope are injured, they or their families don't give a rats about racetrack atmosphere .... they only care about courtroom atmosphere. While it costs money to install these measures, it can be more economical than a lost law suit. Race fans, competitors, teams and officials can still have a good time with safety measures in place.

I personally dont think that the V8s will ever return to WA to race on Barbagallo Raceway, even though there is talk of spending around $5 million on upgrading it. The only hope for WA, in my opinion, is a street circuit, close to the city centre, and that wont happen as Perth people whinge about the slightest inconveniences and they would not put up with a race circuit on the street. The WA Sporting Car Club (operators of Barbagallo) rely heavily on the V8 round for their yearly income, this is now gone and will seriously affect all motorsport in this state.
The WASCC was instrumental in the demise of Superkart racing in WA, by imposing exorbitant track hire fees on this small club, years ago, so the old saying rings true. "What goes around, comes around". They will now feel the pinch, a lot of people in WA wont be sad. |

Canberra speedway has done lots of work over the last 2 seasons and now that we have a catch fence all the way around the track, we should be racing sprintcars there this season.

There are many instances where people have been injured and killed at race tracks around Australia and overseas. In virtually all cases, there was a lack of separation between the car and victim/s. Over the years, as laws have been passed and safety barriers put in place, the injuries have been reduced, but still occur. Just what is the OH&S problem at Wanneroo, has not been published, and may or may not be a smoke screen. But for VESA to make that claim wound surely leave them open to a damages claim. By the way, I didn't know ACT had a speedway again after the closure of Fraser Park years ago (housing development intrusion again ).When you say "We have a catch fence ... " are you a member? If so, good on ya... great sport. ![]() Cheers
