    Unhappy EL ford transmission problem

Firstly, Hello to all Ford lovers.
I hope u are able to assist me.
Just bought a EL falcon. The trans is neither changin gears like it should n is lacking the power upon take off that I would expect in a FORD.
Now i have taken it to the mechanic to test diagnostic but nothing has shown up aside from the steering pressure gauge switch. Now I'm thinkin it could be either in limp home mode and in need of a new transmission or it is the computer module. can someone plz help. as the mechanic in this small town is hopeless n i require this car sorted at the cheapest price possible so i can drive back home to WA safely with my two youngens. thanks heaps

Are you on drugs? I had an EL once that could pull a 7s 0-100 with nothing but extractors! Those engines have HEAPS of balls. I currently run an NCII 4sp that has more kick than most modern cars and all its got is thermo fans.

I would say that it is in need of a new transmission. Fortunately, as it is a FORD, you can get a second hand unit pretty cheap at a wrecker and it may cost $500 in labour to have it fitted (some wreckers might fit it for you as well, and exchange your old box and lower the price as a result). Good thing it isn't a Holden, because the Holdens of that age had the rear mount cross member welded to the body (in a rather rubbish and futile attempt at improving the chassis rigidity, which was also quite rubbish) and changing the gearbox meant taking the engine out too ($$$).

Hi, am in Perth too, have an old EL taxi wreck (head) with good computer and gearbox, can probably lend you the computer if it comes to it however the gearbox may be a trifle excessive to post over. Firstly, however, would like to see you troll through the search function (top blue banner. search is third along from log out) and check out everything being on limp mode and automatic transmissions as there has been plenty of excellent content in this regard on the Forum of late. Well, now, can you check the trans oil, and, can you tell me if you top it up when the engine is running or engine not not running? Access is drivers side 16mm nut rear of trans, and, watch your knuckles when you remove the bolt as it is usually pretty tight. Speedo working obviously by figures quoted of 110 klicks for 3k rpm, incidentally that's pretty good having the hi-speed diff in her. Lotsa other little anomolies that may be putting a literal spanner in the works, so before changing the trans over probably the best place to start is with the nuetral select safety switch being on the passenger side of the trans, try to beg or borrow one local (suggest don't steal / bad karma) and exchange it and see what happens, careful of the little post that sticks out and marries into the trans from the switch. Anyway heaven helps those whom help themselves so with your kind indulgence give the search feature a good going over and if you are dinkum in your efforts and can't then fix the problem will be only to pleased to at least lend you a known good EEC-V computer to possibly help get you home on, good luck, cheers

Try changing trans oil and filter, sometimes a good trans oil flush and oil filter will see it right. ( worked on my wife's aunty's ED ) In my case with limp home mode, I tracked the problem back to the immobiliser earth wire burning out the separate trans computer ( not sure if EF/L have an integrated computer which is part of the main ECU, on SII EA, it is a separate module/computer )
Not all auto trans problems necessitate a trans rebuild

Could also be a speed sensor (dunno if EL have them as im basing this on my issues with my ED)

    Also throttle sensor

But yeh, start with a full flush and filter change, check condition of the wiring on the auto transmission and all contacts are good, even the dash cluster with a bad connection can cause it and check ya earth connections.

let me tell everyone that i work at ford and built the el au and that mambo jumbo, sunshine if you had of bought an au apart from there nasty looks there a well build car, as for the el im speechless, you got two or more problems with that ryde of yours, its electrical or hydrolic. like the boys told ya top the box up with oil and the way to check it is in d mode while engine is running. if its electronic just throw the car in the rubbish for the money youll spend on this ***** box youll be able to buy urself a run around. theres nothing wrong with fords, only the people who own them. as for the question about me on drugs, i must be becuase your car puilled 7 second flat 0 to 100. now thats POWER. haha

For a near stock GLi that had in excess of 260,000Km, that isn't bad, and it certainly didn't

It wasn't the fastest car in the world, but it certainly wasn't coined "gutless". Bear in mind, that a brand new FG, with the modern day I6 and a ZF 6-speed auto is a 0-100 in 7s flat car. Is that "gutless" too?

Taking it to a mechanic is a waste of time, you need to take it to a transmission specialist who has the right program for the trans.
You are in limp mode, disconnecting the battery will often send it back to normal, but only until the problem returns, then back to limp mode.
Mine done exactly the same, trans shop done a free diagnosis, changed 1 valve for $190 and it s still going strong 3 years later.
but ask around for a good shop, 2 out of 3 will suggest a recon!
Have it trailered or trucked back to Perth, limp mode is for short trips to the nearest repairer.

What faulty transmission coolers, the FG's do not have a reputation for faulty transmission coolers/heat exchangers, yea sure some people would have had a few fail but again every model car built will have a percentage of component failure.
