Default Lucas Epic Diesel Injector Pump

Can anyone give me a sensible reason why these units are expensive to repair/overhaul? I have heard some horror stories about the cost and often see Late model transits being sold for a song because the pumps buggered.

i reckon that too. I got a partner that is a diesel mechanic, like he said injector pumps are full of precision built parts, and expensive materials

I understand that an injector pump has high tolerance components but I cannot agree that the repair costs can/should be higher then rebuilding an entire engine (I just rebuilt my BMW engine for $2500, sourcing new parts from Germany, the UK and the US via ebay). I would love to see a run down of parts and their cost for an injector pump rebuild. I wonder if I would see "O"-ring = $250, or something ludicrous like that? How long is the labour component I wonder?

As an aside, I get most of my parts from ebay now as its far cheaper, by 1000's of percent sometimes. As an example: Front shocks for my BMW, standard monroes from the US: $70 a pair plus $114 freight ---- from Repcos in Perth, over $500 for the same brand shocks!!!! Another, Super Fours Bosch spark plugs cost $130 a set of six in Perth > Ebay from the UK, $40 posted. One last one, fully reconditioned head for my 6 cyclinder BMW, with new valves, cam etc $851 delivered from the US- I was quoted at least $2500 in Oz (a friend paid $8000 for the same job as he was told a new head had to be bought from BMW in Perth). I do all my own labour so I save heaps.

I know what you mean about costs related to fuel injection . With fuel injection and some other worries under my bonnet, I am now $6,300 poorer. Bit of a struggle for an old pensioner. You may cry for me, that's OK. The Stranger.

its not the precision material, other brands you can overhaul with basic tools and measures. Zexel/bosch etc.
My experience with these 10 years ago was the crap hard to get electronics on top of the pump making it worth fitting a Japanese engine or a commodore V6.

we recently had horror stories with some other euro brands. $1700 dollars quoted for the disassembly quotation price.
The equipment supplier then supplied us with brand new DELPHI pumps for $2400 with modified plumbing and service tools.
